Hardship: Group urges Nigerian women to acquire skills to support families

Amid the high level of hardship in the country, Nigerian women have been urged to acquire skills to enable them earn a living and improve the economic condition of their families.

DAILY POST reports that the soaring inflation in the country, caused by the removal of fuel subsidy and devaluation of the currency, has eroded the purchasing power of most Nigerians, throwing many households into poverty.

Hunger was one of the reasons for the just concluded #EndBadGovernance protests which rocked the country for 10 days.

Addressing journalists in Abuja against the backdrop of the protests, the national convener, Friends of Tinubu Shettima, Mrs Bridget Torgua Igbauke, said women can help alleviate poverty, and thereby tackle hunger, in their families by acquiring skills that can enable them to earn income.

“We have come together to make sure that every woman learns a skill. When you are skilled and put the same skill to practice, you earn a wage. When you earn a wage, you make profit and when you make profit, you will be waving good-bye to poverty.

“We are telling all the women to come out and learn a skill and use it to make money, help their families and boost their households.

“We want more women to buy into this scheme that all women must learn a skill,” she said, noting that the President Bola Tinubu has initiated programmes to empower women with vocational skills..

Noting that many Nigerian women struggle through the challenges of managing the family daily amid the high cost of living in the country, Igbauke enjoined them to key into the poverty alleviation programmes of the President Bola Tinubu administration.

According to her, only a woman with marketable skills, no matter how small, could survive the present economic challenges.

Igbauke added, “We the Nigerian women and youth are ready to take advantage of the developmental strides of the Renewed Hope Agenda of the President. We have to do this in order for us to break the cycle of poverty in our families.

“We are ready to change our mindset, our thinking and our perception and attitude towards learning a skill today.

“The President met a lot of issues on the ground. As Nigerians, we can appreciate the fact that Nigeria has been saddled with a lot of problems for a long time.

“In view of this, we cannot expect a President to solve all of these problems in one year or think that he can do it alone. Nigeria’s problem has to be solved by Nigerians, the President and all of us.”
