Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has played down early Premier League title expectations despite his side’s dramatic 5–4 victory over Fulham, insisting that the length and unpredictability of the season make any early conclusions premature.
Speaking to journalists after the high-scoring encounter, Guardiola repeatedly emphasised the demanding nature of the Premier League calendar and warned that many twists still lie ahead in the title race.
“The Premier League is SO LONG, and I promise you I’m the oldest manager in all the Premier League and I’m experienced enough to make long,” Guardiola said.
He acknowledged the growing strength of rival teams across the league, including Chelsea under new manager Enzo Maresca, stressing that competition remains intense across all fronts.
“This is SO LONG, admitting opponents, even Chelsea, impresses me every day more and more with Maresca… But it’s long, it’s LONG! The Premier League is SO LONG, many things will happen!” he added.
Guardiola also drew on Manchester City’s recent history of late-season title surges to underline his point, reminding critics and fans alike that early league positions often mean little by May.
“We won six Premier League titles, four or five in December, January, February, we were behind by four or five points, and we won it,” the City boss recalled.
According to the Spaniard, the secret to winning the Premier League lies in steady improvement, squad fitness, and consistency over the long campaign rather than early dominance.
“Consistent, be there, improve. The team who wins the Premier League is the team who grows during the months, and this is what we try. No injuries, less as possible, go there. It’s SO LONG!” Guardiola concluded.
Manchester City’s thrilling win over Fulham keeps them firmly in the title conversation, but Guardiola’s message remains clear: the real test of champions is endurance, not early-season fireworks.
City are trailing by two points behind league leaders Arsenal, who sit dangerously at 30 points.
