In a bid to enhance electricity supply and revive small-scale businesses, the governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has flagged off the distribution of the first phase of 500 transformers to rural communities across the state’s 44 local government areas.

Speaking on Sunday during the unveiling ceremony, Governor Yusuf said the project aims to address the persistent irregular power supply that has severely hampered microeconomic activities and socio-economic development in Kano.

The governor noted that the provision of the transformers forms part of his administration’s broader agenda to redefine industrial growth and stimulate business activity, particularly in rural areas.

According to him, the supply of electricity infrastructure aligns with his policy to light up both rural and urban communities, describing it as a strategic measure to tackle the security risks posed by darkness.

He called on stakeholders to take full ownership of the facility and directed local government chairmen to establish committees responsible for ensuring the safety and proper maintenance of the transformers.

“The distribution is the first phase and it is another milestone in fulfilment of our mandate to provide rural electrification across the communities. This is not only another infrastructural project, but it is a bold step to improving the electricity supply to our people.

“It is our firm conviction that a reliable power supply will drive industrial development, the well-being of the people of Kano, and economic growth. We reaffirm our commitment to rebuild power infrastructure and sustainable development for energy supply in Kano,” Governor Yusuf said.

Also speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Rural Community Development, Hon. AbdulKadir Abdulsalam, commended the governor’s commitment to improving livelihoods and boosting the microeconomy in rural areas.

He described the distribution of the transformers as a landmark achievement that reflects the governor’s resolve to tackle developmental challenges facing rural communities.

“The provision of the transformers is a milestone achievement and a giant stride that will change livelihood, improve economic viability, boost the micro economy and stimulate investment opportunities. The singular gesture will restore hope and revive the expectation of residents,” Abdulsalam said.

A key highlight of the event was the symbolic handover of the transformers to the local government chairmen.
