G7 Backs Political Transition In Syria

Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) have expressed their readiness to support a political transition in Syria, noting the need for a government that meets international standards of governance and human rights.

Syria has been going through a transition period following the deposal of the former president, Bashar al-Assad, by joint rebel forces on Sunday.

The Syrian rebels subsequently appointed Mohammed al-Bashir as the interim prime minister on Tuesday, to pilot the country’s affairs until March 1, 2025.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the G7 affirmed their commitment to aiding “a transition process that leads to credible, inclusive, and non-sectarian governance” in the country.

They stressed that the country’s political transition must uphold “respect for the rule of law, universal human rights, including women’s rights, the protection of all Syrians, including religious and ethnic minorities, transparency and accountability.”

“The G7 will work with and fully support a future Syrian government that abides by those standards and results from that process,” the leaders said.

Additionally, the G7 called on all stakeholders to “preserve Syria’s territorial integrity and national unity, and respect its independence and sovereignty.”

Meanwhile, Syria’s Interim Prime Minister, al-Bashir on Thursday, announced plans to suspend the country’s constitution and dissolve its parliament for a period of three months.

According to Syria’s new government spokesman, Obaida Arnaout, this decision is reportedly part of a broader effort to stabilize the nation and implement key reforms following years of conflict.

Arnaout said, “a judicial and human rights committee will be established to examine the constitution and then introduce amendments.

Speaking to the AFP news agency, he hinted that there would be a meeting on Tuesday “between Salvation Government ministers and the former ministers” of al-Assad’s administration to carry out the transfer of power.

“This transitional period will last three months, our priority is to preserve and protect institutions.”

Arnaout said that the current administration would respect “the rule of law,” adding that “all those who committed crimes against the Syrian people will be judged in accordance with the law.”

Asked about religious and personal freedoms, he said “we respect religious and cultural diversity in Syria.”
