FIFA-World-Cup

Winning the FIFA World Cup is regarded as the pinnacle of international football, but successfully defending the title has proven to be one of the sport’s rarest achievements.

In nearly a century of World Cup history, only two countries – Italy and Brazil – have retained the men’s FIFA World Cup trophy, underlining the difficulty of remaining champions on football’s biggest stage.

With defending champions Argentina still in contention to emulate the feat at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, attention has once again turned to the exclusive list of nations that have successfully defended the title.

Italy (1934 and 1938)

Italy became the first nation to win consecutive FIFA World Cup titles after lifting the trophy in 1934 and successfully defending it four years later.

The Azzurri claimed their maiden World Cup on home soil in 1934, defeating Czechoslovakia 2-1 after extra time in the final.

They returned to the tournament in France in 1938 under legendary coach Vittorio Pozzo and justified their status as defending champions by defeating Norway, hosts France and Brazil before overcoming Hungary 4-2 in the final, with Silvio Piola scoring twice.

Italy appeared well placed to pursue an unprecedented third consecutive World Cup title, but the outbreak of the Second World War led to the cancellation of the 1942 and 1946 tournaments, bringing an abrupt end to their golden era.

Brazil (1958 and 1962)

Brazil became the second – and, to date, the most recent – country to successfully defend the FIFA World Cup.

After suffering heartbreak in the 1950 final, the South Americans bounced back in spectacular fashion by winning the 1958 World Cup in Sweden.

The tournament introduced the world to 17-year-old Pelé, who starred alongside Garrincha, Didi, Vavá and Mário Zagallo as Brazil defeated hosts Sweden 5-2 in the final.

Four years later in Chile, Brazil retained the trophy despite losing Pelé to injury during the group stage. Inspired by Garrincha, the Seleção defeated Czechoslovakia 3-1 in the final to become back-to-back world champions.

Brazil’s quest for an unprecedented third successive World Cup title ended at the 1966 tournament after an unexpected group-stage elimination.

With Argentina now seeking to defend the title they won in 2022, they have an opportunity to become only the third nation in history to win consecutive men’s FIFA World Cup crowns.
