Four die, several rescued after vehicle plunges into dam in Kano

By Hadiza Yusuf

Four people have been confirmed dead, while others were rescued, after a Golf Wagon carrying about ten passengers plunged into Tomas Dam in Danbatta Local Government Area of Kano State.

According to the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Fire Service, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, the vehicle was travelling from Kano to Roni in Jigawa State before the tragic incident.

“The accident occurred on Tuesday, at about 7:10 p.m., when the Kano State Fire Service received an emergency call reporting the crash.

“The Fire Service Branch in Danbatta Local Government Area received an emergency call at about 7:10 p.m. from one Suleman reporting the crash of a Golf Wagon with an unknown registration number,” the spokesperson revealed.

The PRO added that the vehicle reportedly lost control and fell into the dam, trapping all the occupants inside.

Firefighters from the Danbatta station were immediately deployed to the scene and successfully rescued all the victims from the submerged vehicle.

However, four of the victims were later confirmed dead after being rushed to Danbatta General Hospital for medical attention.

The deceased include Shamsiya Miko, about 35 years old, Fatima Danlami, about 40 years old, and two others who were yet to be identified at the time of filing this report.

Preliminary findings by the fire service suggested that a burst tyre caused the driver to lose control, leading to the crash into the dam.

The Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, expressed sadness over the incident and urged motorists to exercise caution while driving.
