Flash Flood: Lagos Govt Apologizes To Ikorodu Residents

The Lagos State Government has apologised to residents of Ikorodu over the inconvenience caused by ongoing drainage construction works, following concerns raised in a trending video about flash flooding in the area.

In the video seen by THE WHISTLER on Monday, some residents of the area could be heard discussing the flood that submerged several compounds.

Reacting in a post on X, Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, assured residents that the project, awarded by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is designed to provide a permanent solution to recurrent flooding.

Wahab explained that the contractor had been directed to commence immediate excavation toward the discharge point and prioritise the construction of culverts before continuing with the concrete lining as part of the broader project scope.

“I have directed the contractor to immediately commence excavation work toward the discharge point and to prioritise the construction of culverts. The concrete lining, which is part of the broader project scope, will continue once the culvert work is stabilised.

“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience residents are currently facing. This is temporary. What we are doing now is laying the groundwork for a permanent fix that will improve the quality of life for everyone in that area,” Wahab said.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to delivering durable infrastructure saying, “We are committed to building infrastructure that works and endures.”

In July 4, 2024, THE WHISTLER reports that Wahab apologised to residents and commuters over floods occasioned by heavy rainfall.

The downpour, which lasted for about 10 hours, affected areas such as Eredo, Bojije, Epe, Sangotedo, Ibeju-Lekki, Awoyaya, Labora, and Abijon.

Other areas affected include Iyana-Oworo, Agege, Ijegun-Isheri Osun and Gbagada.

The flood grounded vehicular movement on the roads, and led to the collapse of a two-storey building in the Mushin area of the state.
