Five Dead, Several Injured In Multiple Crashes In Lagos
Multiple road accidents on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway claimed the lives of five individuals and left at least nine others injured on Wednesday, causing massive traffic disruptions and prompting an emergency response.
According to the spokesperson of the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Florence Okpe, the first incident occurred near Car Park C, involving a yellow Mazda bus (registration number LGB465XA) and an unregistered Howo truck.
Preliminary investigations suggest the truck was speeding and experienced brake failure, leading it to crash into the bus as it was making a turn.
The impact proved fatal for five passengers—two men and three women—while seven others, including five men and two women, sustained injuries.
Victims were transported to Famobis Hospital in Mowe, and the deceased were taken to Idera Morgue.
Okpe confirmed that the crash involved 12 passengers in total, all adults.
“A total of 12 passengers (seven male adults and five female adults) were involved in the crash. Two male adults and three female adults were killed, while five male adults and two female adults were injured.
“The injured victims were taken to Famobis Hospital, Mowe, while the corpses were deposited at Idera Morgue.
“The suspected causes of the crash were speeding, brake failure, and loss of control on the part of the Howo truck, which rammed into the Mazda bus as the driver was negotiating a turning point at Car Park C,” she said.
In a separate incident, THE WHISTLER reports that a petrol tanker attempting a U-turn near the NASFAT junction overturned and later exploded, setting six vehicles ablaze and injuring two people.
Though the tanker didn’t ignite immediately, it exploded shortly after falling, intensifying chaos along the busy corridor.
“The tanker fell off when it was about negotiating that U-Turn. Although the tanker did not explode immediately, it exploded after some time,” Okpe told THE WHISTLER.
The two accidents caused significant traffic congestion along both directions of the expressway.
Severe traffic congestion stretched from the NASFAT U-turn to Arepo and from Mile 12 Market, Ogere to CDK on the Lagos-bound side.
The inbound section experienced similar gridlock, with traffic extending from RCCG Car Park C to Ogere Resort.
FRSC’s DCC SD Abdullahi, Corridor Commander 1 for the Lagos-Ibadan-Egbeda route, in a statement assured the public that emergency teams, including the FRSC, Fire Service, Police, and other traffic agencies, are working to restore order and remove road obstructions.
“Motorists are advised not to panic as professionals are on ground to take care of the situation and the necessary equipment being mobilised for the necessary recovery operations.
“While FRSC, Fire fighters, Police and other traffic agencies are doing their best to remove the obstructions, People who have time-bound activities may explore alternative routes and for those who can postpone their trips, let us endeavor to do so while the situation gets controlled.
“FRSC wishes us safe trips to our various destinations,” Abdullahi said.
