Five Cheat Death In Lagos Road Crashes
Two individuals sustained serious injuries while three others were rescued unhurt in separate road crashes over the weekend in the Mile 2 and Surulere areas of Lagos State.
It took timely interventions of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) to rescue victims.
According to a statement on Sunday by LASTMA’s spokesperson, Mr. Adebayo Taofiq, the first accident occurred at Olohunsogo Bus Stop, inward Mile 2, where a Toyota Camry crashed into a stationary Scania truck.
The impact left the Camry driver and a passenger seriously injured.
He said emergency responders from LASTMA arrived at the scene quickly and extricated both victims, who were later rushed to Ademola Hospital, opposite the Ijanikin Police Station, for immediate medical attention.
Adebayo stated that preliminary investigations indicated that the Camry driver was travelling at excessive speed, lost control, and rammed into the parked truck.
The driver of the stationary vehicle was taken into custody by LASTMA officials, while police officers from the Ijanikin Division provided necessary security support at the scene.
“Preliminary inquiries revealed that the ghastly incident was precipitated by the Camry driver’s reckless indulgence in excessive speeding, which ultimately resulted in the fatal loss of vehicular control.
“The driver of the stationary Scania truck was apprehended at the scene by LASTMA operatives, while officers of the Ijanikin Police Division provided the requisite security reinforcement,” Adebayo said.
To prevent traffic congestion, he said LASTMA officials also ensured that the wrecked vehicles were promptly cleared from the road.
In a related incident at the Stadium Hotel axis of Ojuelegba, Surulere, Adebayo said a white commercial Mazda bus lost control and crashed into a median within the BRT lane.
The accident, which occurred while the bus was allegedly speeding, left the driver unconscious and two passengers visibly shaken.
LASTMA personnel swiftly evacuated all three occupants to a nearby medical facility. Fortunately, none of the victims suffered life-threatening injuries.
One of the passengers, Mrs. Aina Kadri, told authorities that the bus suffered an abrupt brake failure just moments before the crash.
Reacting to the incidents, LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, praised the quick and coordinated response of LASTMA operatives and officers of the Nigeria Police.
He reiterated LASTMA’s commitment to timely rescue efforts, efficient traffic management, and the safety of road users across Lagos.
Bakare-Oki also issued a stern warning to motorists on the dangers of excessive speeding and vehicle neglect.
He urged all drivers to adhere strictly to speed limits and ensure regular maintenance of their vehicles, noting that many road mishaps are preventable.
