FEMD Orders Removal Of Defective Buildings In Abuja Estate
The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD) has ordered the demolition of six blocks of two-storey buildings at Angel Martin Estate, Pyakasa, along Airport Road, Abuja, after the structures failed integrity tests.
The intervention followed the collapse of a retaining wall at the estate’s security post on Sunday evening, which left a guard on duty injured, a statement on Monday by Nkech Isa, Head of Public Affairs for the department.
Acting Director General of FEMD, Engr. Abdulrahman Mohammed, who confirmed the development, said the wall’s failure raised serious concerns about the safety of nearby buildings still under construction.
“The buildings are sited on a hill, and if not removed, they may collapse and endanger other structures in the vicinity,” he warned.
Engr. Abdulrahman disclosed that his department has already notified the Department of Development Control to begin the immediate removal of the defective structures.
The FEMD boss cautioned developers against ignoring approved building standards, stressing that strict compliance with building codes is critical to preventing avoidable tragedies.
“We appeal to developers to follow the building codes strictly to reduce incidents of collapse,” he said.
He further urged residents of the FCT to remain safety conscious and to promptly report emergencies by dialling 112, the toll-free emergency number.
