FAAN Decries Growing Passenger Misconduct, Vows Sanctions

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has expressed concern over the growing frequency of unruly conduct by passengers across the nation’s airports, warning that such actions will attract stiff penalties.

In a statement on Monday, FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mrs. Obiageli Orah, described the behaviour as “entirely unacceptable” and contrary to civil aviation standards.

She urged travellers to familiarise themselves with the Passengers’ Rights and Responsibilities as well as the Airlines’ Obligations published by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and FAAN Bye Laws, noting that violations will be sanctioned in line with the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Annex 17, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations (Part 17), and FAAN Bye Laws.

“Moving forward, the Authority will not hesitate to implement relevant sanctions against any form of disruptive or threatening behaviour within airport premises,” Orah said.

She disclosed that FAAN is reviewing its protocols for restraining and prosecuting offenders under the Airport Approved Security Programme and other relevant laws.

On the recent incident involving a passenger on an Ibom Air flight, FAAN explained that while the situation was initially managed by security at the Murtala Muhammed Airport Domestic Terminal 2 (MM2), the Aviation Security (AVSEC) team later took the individual into custody and handed her over to the Nigerian Police for investigation and prosecution.

FAAN reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety, security, and comfort of all airport users, warning that any inappropriate behaviour will be met with the “full weight of applicable laws and protocols.”
