Expert warns Nigerians about danger of marathon reading to eye

An eye expert, Dr Azeez Amuda, has cautioned Nigerians against marathon reading to protect their eyes.

Amuda, popularly known as Baba Oloju pointed out that the eyes should be given some rest every hour by closing them for like two minutes before continuing with viewing things.

He particularly urged journalists to undergo eye tests at least once a year and avoid visiting quacks and chemists for eye treatment.

He spoke on Tuesday while giving a health talk organised by the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Kwara Council.

Amuda said: “It’s like somebody running a race for two hours non-stop against one that observed two minutes of rest at intervals, who among them will be exhausted first?”.

Baba Oloju further warned against self-prescribed eye medication.

“There are several cases of people who listen to hearsay on how to care for their eyes but end up losing both eyes.

“Just like conjunctivitis in newborns, in which babies bring out discharge in their eyes and mothers are advised to apply drops of breast milk to clear the eyes, which can lead to complete blindness,” he stressed.

He continued by noting that patients’ blood pressure needs to be monitored when receiving treatment for eye issues because excessive blood pressure might cause difficulties with the eyes.
