EPL: I’m not sure Arteta wanted Gyokeres at Arsenal – Scholes

Former Manchester United midfielder, Paul Scholes, is not convinced that Arsenal’s new striker Viktor Gyokeres was Mikel Arteta’s first choice.

Scholes has now questioned if the 27-year-old will suit Arteta’s tactical system at the Emirates.

Gyokeres became the Gunners’ marquee signing this summer after they agreed a £64million deal with Sporting with him.

The Swede, who scored 97 goals in 102 games while in Portugal, will wear the number 14 shirt for Arsenal, famously worn by legend Thierry Henry.

“[Arsenal needed a] Centre forward, I just wonder if you’ve chosen the right one,” Scholes said on The Overlap Fan Debate.

“Because there was a lot of um-ing and ah-ing about it, I wondered if Mikel Arteta really wanted him, as the main one he wants? I’m not too sure, and he’s got him now.”
