Enugu ready to tackle flooding, says SEMA

By Anayo Okoli

The Enugu State Government has expressed readiness to effectively manage any flooding incidents, following proactive measures put in place across the state.

As part of its preparedness efforts, Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah approved the training of Local Emergency Management Committee members across the 17 local government areas, alongside other key stakeholders. The training, themed “Building and Strengthening Emergency Resilience in Enugu State,” was held in the first quarter of the year.

The Executive Secretary of the Enugu State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Mrs. Chinasa Mbah, said the initiative was designed to strengthen capacity for responding to both natural and human-induced emergencies.

She noted that the agency has also intensified collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Red Cross to carry out community engagement programmes, emphasizing that local residents often serve as first responders during disasters.

According to her, sensitisation campaigns, including radio jingles, are being conducted in flood-prone communities in partnership with local government authorities and traditional rulers to raise awareness and improve preparedness.

Mrs. Mbah further highlighted ongoing infrastructure development by the state government, particularly the construction of roads with adequate drainage systems to manage water runoff and reduce the impact of flooding.

She added that the government is also stockpiling relief materials to cushion the effects on residents in the event of flooding.

The measures, she said, underscore the state’s commitment to safeguarding lives, property, and livelihoods against potential flood disasters.
