The Akwa Ibom State government has extended the N20,000 monthly allowance earlier approved for NYSC members serving in the state to all corps members of Akwa Ibom State origin serving across the nation.

The government said the decision is to cushion living expenses and promote the well-being of Corps members.

The decision was announced by the State Commissioner for Information, Hon. Aniekan Umanah, on Tuesday.

He said the grant is subject to periodic review based on prevailing circumstances.

Recall that Governor Umo Eno had last week approved an increase in the monthly state allowance for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in the state from ₦5,000 to ₦20,000.

The governor made this announcement during the second day of the state delivery meeting on Friday, July 4, at the Banquet Hall of Government House, Uyo.

He explained that the increment was to support the federal government’s ₦77,000 monthly allowance, helping corps members meet their basic needs.

“Over 10,000 corps members are posted to Akwa Ibom annually. We must continue to encourage and support them,” Eno said.

The development followed his recent approval for the reconstruction of the NYSC orientation camp at Ikot Itie Idung in Nsit Atai, as part of ongoing efforts to improve the welfare of corps members in the state.
