Employers Get January 31 Deadline To File Employee Tax Returns

The Federal Capital Territory Internal Revenue Service (FCT-IRS) has called on private companies and Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) in the FCT to file their employee annual tax returns for the year 2024 before the stipulated deadline of January 31, 2025.

Mustapha Sumaila , Head, Corporate Communications for FCT-IRS revealed this on Sunday.

Sumaila noted that the directive aligns with Section 81 of the Personal Income Tax Act (PITA) 2011 (as amended) and the PAYE Regulations, which mandate employers in the FCT to file annual returns detailing all emoluments paid to their employees, along with the total taxes remitted, by January 31 of each year.

He stated that the returns are to be filed using the prescribed forms provided by the FCT-IRS.

“This is in compliance with Section 81 of the Personal Income Tax Act (PITA) 2011 (as amended) and the PAYE Regulations, which mandates all employers of labour in the FCT to file annual returns of all emoluments paid to their employees and the total taxes, not later than 31st January of every year in respect of all employees in their employment in the preceding year. The returns are to be filed using the prescribed forms provided by the FCT-IRS,” Sumaila stated.

The Acting Executive Chairman of FCT-IRS, Mr. Michael Ango, who spoke at a stakeholder engagement session for 2025, stressed the legal obligation of employers to comply with these provisions.

He warned that failure to file the returns would attract penalties and sanctions, which the FCT-IRS is prepared to enforce.

He further stated that the best form of compliance is voluntary compliance, which the FCT-IRS expects from all taxpayers in the FCT.

“The best form of compliance is voluntary compliance,” Ango stated.
