El Salvador launches nationwide Bitcoin training for public servants to boost digital economy

El Salvador is taking a bold step in its embrace of Bitcoin by launching a large-scale certification program aimed at educating 80,000 government employees on the cryptocurrency.

The program, overseen by the National Bitcoin Office (ONBTC), is designed to equip public servants with the skills and knowledge needed to effectively manage and implement Bitcoin-related policies within their respective roles.

This initiative is part of El Salvador’s broader strategy to integrate Bitcoin into the national economy, a move that began with the country’s historic decision to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender in 2021.

The certification program, known as “Certification in Public Administration 1,” spans 160 hours and is delivered virtually.

It includes seven detailed modules covering the strategic management, legal framework, and practical application of Bitcoin in public policy.

Stacy Herbert, director of ONBTC, emphasized the program’s potential to have a significant impact on the country’s Bitcoin-driven economy.

She believes that by educating government employees, El Salvador is laying the groundwork for long-term economic success and innovation, particularly in the tech sector.

Herbert also hinted at future educational initiatives aimed at further solidifying El Salvador’s leadership in the global cryptocurrency landscape.

The training is conducted by the Higher School of Innovation in Public Administration (ESIAP), which was established by President Nayib Bukele in August 2021.

This educational push aligns with El Salvador’s vision of creating a Bitcoin-ready workforce that can effectively navigate and capitalize on the opportunities presented by digital currencies.

El Salvador’s success with Bitcoin has not gone unnoticed by other countries facing economic challenges. Argentina, which has been grappling with hyperinflation, has shown keen interest in learning from El Salvador’s experience.

In May, Argentina’s National Securities Commission (CNV) engaged in discussions with El Salvador’s National Commission of Digital Assets (CNAD) to explore collaboration on cryptocurrency adoption and regulation.

This collaboration reflects a growing recognition of Bitcoin’s potential as a tool for economic stabilization and growth.
