EFCC Raids Abia Communities; Businessman Claims Wife Naked During Break-In
Twenty-two alleged online fraudsters have been taken into custody by agents of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission’s (EFCC), Uyo Zonal Directorate, Abia state.
According to the commission on Monday, the suspects were apprehended in Umuagu and Olokoro communities in Abia state, during a sting operation on Friday, December 6, 2024.
However, during the raid in Abia, operatives of the anti-graft agency allegedly broke into the home of one Mr. Ugochukwu Ezeanyagu, a contractor and businessman, at midnight.
In an interview with ABN TV, Ezeanyagu claimed that the agents used hammers to smash through the gates and doors to get inside and also confiscated his phone and other electronics, but they could not find any proof that connected him to any illegal conduct or internet fraud.
The authorities had previously questioned him about whether he was the owner of the Toyota Corolla and Mercer SUV parked in the premises while allegedly accusing Ezeanyagu of being an online scammer, but allegedly apologised after discovering no proof to back up their allegations.
The worst humiliation, according to him, was being asked to lie and face down alongside his eight-month pregnant wife who was allegedly naked when the operatives broke into the house.
Ezeanyagu added that his pregnant wife had suffered severe trauma as a result of the tragic event and had been admitted to the hospital ever since.
He is demanding N150m through his legal team and has appealed for justice and urged the EFCC to take more humanitarian and professional measures to prevent hurting innocent people.
“The rights of Our Client, his wife as well as that of his security guard have been breached owing to the irresponsible and criminal conduct of the men of the EFCC.
“May we also put it on record that there are CCTV footages of some parts of the operations of these EFCC officials.
“We are therefore demanding for justice for our client and his family. We ask for the sum of One Hundred and Fifty Million (N150,000,000.00) naira only as compensation to assuage for the pain caused to our client and his family.
“We also demand a public apology to Our Client from the EFCC officials,” Ezeanyagu’s legal team stated.
Recall that on November 1, 2023 the Executive Chairman of the Commission, Olanipekun Olukoyede, ordered that sting operations at night be discontinued in all EFCC commands following the arrest of 69 students from Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ilfe, Osun State, that sparked controversies about activities of the agency
Even after the Chairman banned night raids, EFCC officials allegedly persisted in breaking into people’s houses at strange hours in order to make arrests.
