Ebonyi LG Chairman Laments Beheading Of Farmer, Threatens Resignation

The Chairman of Edda Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Mr Chima Ekumankama, said over the weekend that he was considering resigning from his position following the beheading of a farmer in the area.

The beheading occurred at the Oso Edda community last Thursday. The victim, it was gathered, is a middle-aged man, identified as Dick Nnachi. Nnachi was working on his farm when he was beheaded, with his head taken away by his killers.

Ekumankama hinted that he might resign from office during a New Yam Festival at Nguzu Edda Community Primary School, where a minute’s silence was observed in remembrance of the victim.

According to him, “Sometimes I just feel like resigning to go back to my business just because each time I see the blood of an Edda man dropped on the floor, it pains me; it makes me very uncomfortable and very sad.

“If there is any day you hear that I have resigned, know that this is the reason I have to resign. I am seriously in pain. Our people are being slaughtered, and each time they cry to me, I shed tears; I also cry.”

He appealed to Governor Francis Nwifuru to use his good offices to restore security at the insecurity-prone Oso Edda and Amasiri communities in the LGA.

He said, “I am appealing to His Excellency to please do something. We don’t want the killings to continue. Urgently deploy the army, police, and other security agencies to Oso Edda.”

It was gathered that the two communities in the LGA had had a long history of violent land disputes, which had claimed multiple lives despite repeated government interventions.

Meanwhile, the police spokesperson in the state, SP Joshua Ukandu, has confirmed the killing. He said officers had been deployed to the disputed area. He warned residents to stay away from the buffer zone declared by security agencies.
