Drunk Driver Crashes Into Lagos Streetlight, Injures Many Passengers

Several passengers were left injured over the weekend after a commercial bus, allegedly driven by a drunken driver, lost control and crashed into a streetlight pole along the Alausa corridor of Ikeja, Lagos.

According to the spokesperson of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Mr Adebayo Taofiq, the lone accident involved a fully loaded commercial bus.

He stated that preliminary investigations confirmed that the driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.

“The driver, grievously impaired by alcohol, lost vehicular control and violently rammed into a streetlight pole,” Adebayo said in a statement on Sunday.

The impact of the collision caused panic in the area and left several passengers with varying degrees of injuries.

A couple seated in the middle row sustained significant injuries, along with two other passengers, a man and a woman.

“The ferocity of the impact triggered widespread alarm and resulted in significant injuries to several passengers, notably a couple seated in the middle row,” he said.

LASTMA operatives stationed nearby responded swiftly to the incident.

The injured individuals were rescued from the wreckage, and taken to the Trauma and Emergency Centre at the Toll Gate for further treatment.

Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, condemned the dangerous behaviour of driving under the influence.

He reiterated the agency’s commitment to tackling such recklessness through ongoing monitoring and public education campaigns.

Bakare-Oki noted that LASTMA’s Monitoring and Surveillance Unit remains actively engaged with drivers in motor parks across the state, reinforcing the agency’s signature campaign: “Don’t Drink and Drive.”

He also extended sympathies to the injured victims and wished them a speedy recovery.
