Driver Arrested For Killing Pedestrian In Lagos
A female pedestrian was tragically killed on Sunday in a lone auto crash involving a black Toyota Tundra at Mosalasi Roundabout, located along New Ipaja Road in the Ipaja area of Lagos State.
According to eyewitnesses, the driver of the vehicle, a male, was allegedly speeding excessively when he lost control of the car.
It was gathered that the vehicle veered off the road, mounted the pedestrian walkway, and struck the woman, who died instantly from the impact.
The force of the crash carried the vehicle into a nearby private compound known for livestock sales, destroying parts of the perimeter fence and an advertising billboard.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Mr. Adebayo Taofiq, said the driver attempted to flee after the accident.
However, LASTMA officials apprehended him before he could escape.
He was later handed over to police officers from the Gowon Estate Division, who were on the ground at the time.
Adebayo added that the remains of the deceased were handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for necessary procedures, while the suspect has been taken into custody for interrogation as part of an ongoing investigation.
Speaking on the incident, LASTMA General Manager Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki expressed deep sorrow and extended his condolences to the family of the deceased.
“This is a deeply sorrowful occurrence that underscores the grave consequences of reckless driving. We mourn with the family of the deceased and pray earnestly that the Almighty grants them the strength and fortitude to bear this irreparable loss,” he said.
Bakare-Oki also used the occasion to call on all motorists—both private and commercial—to ensure regular maintenance of their vehicles, especially the braking systems.
He stressed that obeying traffic regulations is not just a legal responsibility but a moral obligation to protect lives and property on the roads.
