A customs officer whose identity is yet to be confirmed has allegedly killed a policeman along the East-West Road in Patani, Delta State.

Sources at Zone C of the Customs Federal Operations Unit (FOU) confirmed the incident to THE WHISTLER on Saturday and assured that “It’s being handled”.

According to Zagazola Makama, a counterinsurgency expert, the incident allegedly occurred at about 11:58 pm on Friday.

An eyewitness and police officer who reported the incident, according to Makama, said he heard gunshots and saw a Toyota RAV4 veer off the road into a ditch near a Customs checkpoint.

The officer deployed to a stop-and-search checkpoint along the East-West Road reported that he rushed to the scene and discovered that the driver of the vehicle, believed to be a police officer based on his attire, had been fatally shot.

Although Makama said the customs officer has been arrested and is currently in custody, the Delta Police Command could not confirm the incident at press time.

“I will find out,” the Delta Police Command spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, said in response to THE WHISTLER‘s inquiry on Saturday.

The Customs Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone C covers Abia/Imo, Anambra/Enugu/Ebonyi, and Edo/Delta States, respectively.

Meanwhile, the corpse of the slain officer has allegedly been evacuated to the Patani General Hospital mortuary.
