Commercial Bus Kills Pedestrian, Injures Two In Lagos

A tragic accident involving a commercial bus claimed the life of a pedestrian and left two others injured on Saturday at the Iyana Ejigbo area of Lagos.
According to the spokesperson of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Adebayo Taofiq, preliminary reports suggest the bus was speeding when it suffered a sudden brake failure, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle. It veered off the road and struck three bystanders.
“Preliminary findings indicate that the commercial bus, reportedly travelling at an excessive speed, experienced a catastrophic brake failure, causing the driver to lose control. The vehicle veered off course and forcefully collided with unsuspecting bystanders,” Adebayo said in a statement.
He said the bus driver and conductor reportedly fled the scene, abandoning both victims and vehicle.
LASTMA officials, in collaboration with the Ejigbo Police Division, responded swiftly to the scene. The deceased, who was trapped under the bus, was extricated by rescue personnel, and all the victims were immediately transported to the General Hospital in Isolo for medical attention.
The vehicle has been handed over to the police for further investigation.
Expressing his condolences, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the incident as avoidable and urged motorists to observe speed limits and prioritize regular vehicle maintenance, especially of braking systems.
