Colombia Beat Ghana 1-0, End Black Stars’ W/Cup Campaign

Colombia booked their place in the Round of 16 of the World Cup with a deserved 1-0 victory over Ghana, condemning the Black Stars to elimination after a disappointing display in Kansas City.

Jhon Arias scored the decisive goal in the 14th minute as the South Americans dominated proceedings and advanced to a last-16 clash with Switzerland.

The Colombians almost made the scoreline more emphatic but were repeatedly denied by Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Zigi, whose impressive saves kept his side in the contest despite being largely outplayed.

The match was played in sweltering conditions, with temperatures remaining above 30 degrees Celsius well into the night, but Colombia adapted better from the outset.

Ghana nearly made the perfect start when Thomas Partey drove a long-range effort narrowly wide inside the opening minute.

Both teams suffered early injury setbacks. Colombia lost striker Jhon Cordoba to a groin injury and introduced Luis Suarez, while Ghana defender Marvin Senaya was forced off with a hamstring problem and replaced by Alidu Seidu.

The breakthrough came when Suarez burst down the right flank before delivering a pinpoint cross to the far post, where the unmarked Arias volleyed home after Seidu failed to track his run.

Ghana struggled to respond, with Antoine Semenyo seeing a deflected effort fly over the crossbar as the Black Stars failed to register a single shot on target throughout the encounter.

Colombia continued to threaten before the break. Luis Diaz dragged an effort wide with only Zigi to beat, while Suarez headed off target from Jefferson Lerma’s cross. Zigi then produced an outstanding save to keep out Johan Mojica’s header in first-half stoppage time.

After the restart, Colombia maintained complete control.

Captain James Rodriguez, making his 130th appearance, was withdrawn at half-time, but his replacement Richard Rios immediately threatened with a low effort that flashed wide.

Gustavo Puerta forced another excellent save from Zigi before Diaz had a goal ruled out for offside after finishing from Lerma’s cross. The Liverpool forward was later denied in a one-on-one situation by the Ghana goalkeeper.

Partey came closest to rescuing Ghana midway through the second half but dragged another low effort narrowly wide.

Colombia continued creating opportunities through Juan Fernando Quintero, Diaz and Davinson Sanchez, but Zigi’s heroics ensured the score remained 1-0 until the final whistle.

The defeat ended Ghana’s World Cup campaign on a disappointing note. The Black Stars finished the tournament without recording a shot on target in the match and managed only four attempts on target across their four games, with only Iraq producing fewer at the competition.

Colombia, meanwhile, strengthened their reputation as one of the tournament’s dark horses. They finished with 20 attempts, eight of them on target, extended their unbeaten run in normal time at the World Cup to seven matches, and recorded a third consecutive clean sheet.

Ghana became the seventh of the nine African representatives to exit the competition in the Round of 32, leaving only Morocco and Egypt to continue the continent’s challenge at the tournament.
