Chelsea’s Mudryk Faces Four-Year Ban For Doping
Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk is facing a potential ban of up to four years after he was charged by the Football Association with a doping offence.
The Ukrainian forward was provisionally suspended in December having tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance named meldonium which was administered abroad when Mudryk was not on Chelsea duty.
He was on international duty with Ukraine against Albania, and Georgia in November 2024.
The Football Association confirmed in a statement on Wednesday that Mudryk has now been charged for the offence.
The statement read: “We can confirm that Mykhailo Mudryk has been charged with Anti-Doping Rule Violations alleging the presence and/or use of a prohibited substance, in terms of Regulations 3 and 4 of The FA’s Anti-Doping Regulations. As this is an ongoing case, we are not in a position to comment further at this time.”
Under FA rules, players have the right to request analysis of the B sample from a urine test, in the event of an adverse analytical finding in an A sample.
If the B sample analysis confirms the adverse finding, charges will be brought.
Players can either accept the finding and the applicable consequences, or request that the matter proceed to a hearing.
According to reports, Mudryk believes his sample was contaminated, with nothing thought to have changed in his diet since he passed a UK Anti-Doping test in August.
Mudryk joined from Shakhtar Donetsk for £88.5m in January 2023, and his last match for Chelsea was a 2-0 win at German side Heidenheim in the Conference League on November 28.
Mudryk has scored 10 goals in 73 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea.
The Ukrainian winger was stripped of his number 10 shirt ahead of the FIFA World Club Cup, and it was given to Cole Palmer.
