Buhari: Reactions as Nigerians Mourn Death of Former Leader

The world mourns the loss of the immediate past President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in a London clinic on Sunday afternoon following a prolonged illness, as confirmed by his spokesperson, Garba Shehu.

The news has elicited heartfelt condolences from prominent figures, including Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), and Professor Isa Ali Ibrahim (Pantami), Nigeria’s former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy.

Dr. Okonjo-Iweala, the first woman and African to lead the WTO, expressed profound shock and sorrow upon learning of Buhari’s passing. In a statement, she remarked:

“Unbelievable! I did not know just how ill President Buhari was, and minutes after sending my get-well wishes, I have just learned that he passed away. I am so very sad. May the soul of HE @MBuhari rest in perfect peace. My deepest condolences to the entire Buhari family and his close aides and associates.”

Her words reflect the unexpected nature of the loss, especially given her recent message of recovery sent to the former president.

Professor Isa Ali Ibrahim, known as Pantami, also shared his grief, emphasising Buhari’s significant impact. In a poignant tribute, he stated:

“The eyes shed tears, and the heart is grieved, but we do not say anything except what pleases our Lord. O Baba Buhari, we are grieved by your separation. May Allah forgive his shortcomings and admit him into Jannatul Firdaus.”

Pantami’s message underscores the deep personal and spiritual resonance of Buhari’s passing for many in Nigeria.

Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2015 to 2023, was a polarising yet influential figure, known for his efforts to combat corruption and stabilise the economy, although his tenure faced criticism over security challenges and economic hardships. His administration notably nominated Dr. Okonjo-Iweala for the WTO Director-General role in 2020—a decision that bridged past political differences and highlighted her global stature. As Nigeria’s former Finance Minister under Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, Okonjo-Iweala spearheaded reforms that earned her international acclaim, including negotiating a $30 billion debt relief deal with the Paris Club.

The outpouring of tributes reflects Buhari’s complex legacy. Dr. Okonjo-Iweala’s condolence message also recalls her history of resilience in Nigerian politics, having faced personal threats—including the kidnapping of her mother during her tenure as Finance Minister—yet continuing to drive economic reforms. Pantami, whose controversial tenure as minister included implementing policies like SIM card registration to enhance security, also faced public scrutiny but remained a key figure in Nigeria’s digital transformation.

Femi Fani-Kayode, a former Minister of Aviation, also expressed his grief, describing Buhari as a towering figure in Nigeria’s history.

“A great and proud son of Nigeria has passed on today. May the soul of President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR rest in peace,” Fani-Kayode said, encapsulating the sentiments of many who admired Buhari’s dedication to the nation.

Reno Omokri, a former aide to President Goodluck Jonathan, offered a heartfelt prayer for Buhari and his family:

“From God we came and to Him we return. My family and I pray that Almighty God grants President Muhammadu Buhari al-Jannah Firdaus. May his sins be forgiven, and may As-Sami, السميع (The All-Hearing), grant his family the fortitude to bear their loss,” Omokri said.

He also acknowledged Buhari’s contributions, noting:

“He served Nigeria in peacetime and war and left a legacy that was worthy of emulation in many areas.”

Buhari’s presidency was marked by his anti-corruption campaign and efforts to address security challenges, though it was criticised for economic struggles and his frequent medical trips abroad. His earlier role as military Head of State was notable for its focus on discipline and order, shaping his reputation as a steadfast, if polarising, leader.

As Nigeria and the global community reflect on Buhari’s contributions, leaders like Okonjo-Iweala and Pantami highlight the personal and national impact of his leadership. Buhari’s passing marks the end of an era, with his family, aides, and the nation now left to honour his memory while navigating the future.

Details regarding funeral arrangements are yet to be announced, but the nation is expected to honour Buhari under Islamic traditions, as condolences continue to pour in for the former leader.
