Benue IDP clinic records 49 births, 380 pregnant women in one month
Executive Secretary of the Benue State Primary HealthCare Board (BSPHCB), Mrs. Grace Ashi Wende, revealed that around 49 children have been born in the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp located at the International Market, which shelters victims of the Yelwata attack, within the past month.
Speaking to journalists during the Integrated Supportive Supervision (ISS) exercise at the camp, the Executive Secretary further disclosed that approximately 380 pregnant women currently residing at the camp are close to delivery.
She also mentioned that about 490 women received AnteNatal Care (ANC) services during the same timeframe.
Wende confirmed the clinic at the IDP camp has been bustling with activity, noting that IDPs across all age groups and genders have been frequently visiting the facility for consultations and various medical services.
She expressed gratitude to the Benue State Ministry of Health (SMOH) and partners such as UNICEF and other UN agencies for their support, which enabled the installation of a borehole and a 3HP hybrid submersible pump at the clinic.
Wende also stated the contribution of Save the Children International, which supplied hygiene items to enhance the camp’s WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) efforts.
She stated, “The 49th baby has safely been delivered at the Ultramodern Market IDP camp clinic.
Kudos to the multidisciplinary health care team through the collaborative effort of Benue State Ministry of Health (SMOH)), SPHCB, UNICEF, and other UN agencies and partners.”
Wende provided figures indicating that the camp currently hosts 2,336 households and 5,294 individuals, including 380 expectant mothers and 2,536 children, all seeking refuge at the Makurdi IDP camp.
She added, “A total consultation at the International market camp, from 16th June, 2015 to 14th July, 2025, stood at 5,511, including 2,980 adults, out of which 339 were male, while 2,641 of the patients were female.
There were also a total number of 496 adolescents, ranging from 10 to 19 years, that came for consultation; out of this number, 192 of them were male, while 304 of them were female. Others that attended the clinic were about 2,030 children that were between ages 0 to 9 years.”
She further reported, “However, 490 women and six others with disabilities came for AnteNatal Care services; 27 of them delivered at the clinic, and 66 of them were referred to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH) for further checks.”
Moreover, the Executive Secretary mentioned that as of 28th July, 2025, reports from BSUTH show that “Out of a total of 44 patients that were admitted at the facility, none have so far been discharged,” Wende observed.
