Bandits Kidnap Kebbi University Student

A student of Federal University, Birnin Kebbi, has been abducted by suspected bandits at an off-campus hostel in the Kalgo Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

According to eyewitnesses, five armed men stormed the Istijaba Villa hostel at around 3:00 a.m. on Tuesday, accosting students who were sleeping outside their rooms. The attackers demanded money from the students but were told that they had none.

During the confrontation, the armed men assaulted the students, and a neighbour, Malam Siddi Hussaini, who intervened, was shot dead.

Augustine Madubiya, a 400-level student in the Department of Economics, was abducted, while Mr Collaneous Steven, a 200-level student of Business Administration, managed to escape.

Confirming the incident, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Malam Jamilu Magaji, stated that the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Muhammad Zaiyan-Umar, had addressed the students, reaffirming the university’s commitment to ensuring their safety.

“The vice chancellor has assured the students that the university is committed to ensuring their safety and security,” Magaji said.

The Vice Chancellor also communicated the incident to Governor Nasir Idris through the offices of the Secretary to the State Government and the Director of Security Services, Cabinet Office, expressing the university’s gratitude to the local community for their support and calling for further assistance from the government and security agencies.

“We are grateful to the local community for their support, and we call on the government and security agencies to provide further assistance to ensure the safe rescue of our abducted student,” the Vice Chancellor said.

The Kebbi State Police Command has launched a manhunt for the kidnappers, with security operatives combing the surrounding forest in a bid to rescue the abducted student. The Divisional Police Officer in charge of the Kalgo Local Government Area is leading the investigation.

“We are doing everything possible to rescue the abducted student and bring the perpetrators to justice,” said CSP Nafiu Abubakar, spokesperson of the Kebbi State Police Command.
