Attend Classes Or Lose Visas, US Tells Nigerian Students

The United States has issued a stern warning to Nigerian students and other international scholars studying in the U.S., cautioning them against violating the terms of their student visas.

In a statement posted on its official X handle on Monday, the U.S. Mission in Nigeria warned that failure to attend classes, dropping out of school, or abandoning academic programmes without formally notifying the institution could lead to immediate revocation of student visas.

“Students who drop out, skip classes, or leave their programmes of study without informing their school may have their student visa revoked and may lose eligibility for future U.S. visas,” the mission stated.

The warning comes as the U.S. closely monitors whether international students are following immigration rules, especially the requirement to study full-time, which is necessary for those on F-1 and M-1 visas.

The mission urged all student visa holders to strictly comply with the conditions of their stay, including maintaining full-time enrollment and keeping schools informed of any changes to their status.

“Always adhere to the terms of your visa and maintain your student status to avoid any issues,” the statement added.

The U.S. government emphasized that violating visa conditions could have long-term immigration consequences, including denial of future visa applications or removal from the United States.
