Army Nabs ‘Boko Haram Terrorist’ Planning To Establish New Base In Taraba

The Nigerian Army has detained Gambo Grema, a suspected Boko Haram terrorist assigned to set up new bases in Taraba State.

Grema was captured on January 26, 2025, in Mai-Hula town, in the Bali Local Government Area of Taraba State, after being deployed from the Timbuktu Triangle in Borno State.

This was revealed in a statement issued on Tuesday by Captain Oni Olubodunde, the spokesperson for the Nigerian Army’s 6 Brigade in Jalingo. The statement disclosed that the troops followed the terror suspect to his hiding place in Mai-Hula town after acting on reliable intelligence.

According to the military, Grema, also known as Gamboi, has admitted to being a member of a syndicate that is used to conduct kidnappings for ransom to fund terrorism. He equally disclosed that Taraba State was also the deployment site for members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

Olubodunde stated, “The gallant troops of 6 Brigade Nigerian Army/Sector 3 of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), have recorded another milestone in their relentless efforts to ensure peace and security in Taraba State.

“Acting on actionable intelligence, on 26 January 2025, troops successfully tracked and apprehended a suspected member of the Boko Haram Terrorist group, identified as Gambo Grema, also known as Gamboi, in Mai-Hula town, Bali Local Government Area.

“During preliminary investigations, the suspect confessed to being part of a syndicate deployed by Boko Haram to Taraba State. Their mission was to engage in kidnapping for ransom as a means of financing their terrorist operations and to establish a new cell within the state.

“The suspect further revealed that the syndicate also harbored members of the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) who were deployed from the Timbuktu Triangle to carry out other criminal activities.”

The commander of the 6 Brigade Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa stated that the operation demonstrated the Brigade/Sector 3 OPWS’s dedication to eliminating terrorist threats.

Additionally, he said that the Army is dedicated to protecting the lives and property of Taraba State residents and others.

“Members of the public should continue to cooperate with security agencies by providing timely and credible information to aid ongoing operations,” Uwa said.
