Anambra police link crackdown on tinted vehicles to security concerns

By Vincent Ujumadu

AWKA — The Anambra State Police Command has said the ongoing impounding of vehicles with tinted windows is part of a security operation aimed at addressing rising insecurity and preventing criminals from exploiting such vehicles.

The exercise, which has affected vehicles with and without tinted glass permits, has generated concern among motorists across the state.

Explaining the operation, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the exercise is not intended to inconvenience law-abiding residents but to verify the authenticity of tinted glass permits and enforce compliance with relevant vehicle regulations.

According to him, security operatives are impounding vehicles with tinted windows regardless of whether the owners present tinted glass permits. The operation also targets unregistered vehicles and those with concealed, covered or defaced number plates.

Ikenga said the exercise is designed to identify forged or fraudulently obtained tinted glass permits, ensure due process in their issuance, enforce compliance with vehicle registration and number plate regulations, and prevent criminals from using such vehicles to evade identification.

He acknowledged that the exercise may cause temporary inconvenience to motorists but said it had become necessary in view of prevailing security challenges and the increasing use of tinted vehicles by criminal elements.

The police spokesman appealed to residents of Anambra State for understanding, patience and cooperation, assuring them that the operation is being conducted to safeguard lives, protect property and enhance public safety across the state.
