The Anambra Police Command in partnership with sister security agencies has launched Operation Ugo Ga Chi – Zero Kidnapping and other violent crimes in the state.

The event, which held at the Awawbia area of Anambra on Monday, followed the April 10 enactment of the amended Anambra State Homeland Security Law, 2025.

Recall that the Anambra State government approved six bills, including the state-level security law, which is focused on enhancing public safety through community participation and intelligence gathering.

Speaking at the official launch, the State Police Commissioner, Ikioye Orutugu noted that the operation is in continuation of the collective will of the state to combat all forms of insecurity and enable a safe space for both residents and visitors in view of the forthcoming easter celebration.

He said, “This is a proactive template to assuage the fear of the unknown to effectively police the state by encouraging the people of Anambra to come home en mass for this festive period.

“This time, we are aiming at zero kidnapping this season, zero robbery and all types of violent crimes, especially this easter.

“This template when put in place successfully, will encourage Ndi Anambra to come en mass during the forthcoming Easter season. So, I am calling on all Ndi Anambra to provide us with information.

“We need information. That is why we were very intentional with bringing in various stakeholders to launch this operation to drive the needed change.”

Present at the launch were Heads and Representatives of the Nigeria Immigration Services, Nigeria and Security Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Nigeria Navy and Army, Department of State Services (DSS), National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Nigeria Customs Service, Vigilantes Group and government stakeholders among others.

Speaking further, the CP announced an increased number of security presence in the state, particularly in the build-up to the Easter celebration, urging residents not to be bordered by their activities.

These activities, backed by the Operation’s intelligence-driven mandate comprise stop-search activities; the police explained that there would be more visible policing, reiterating the need for residents to allow operatives to execute their duties, unhindered.

Meanwhile, stakeholders present at the launch have asked the various levels of government and the authorities of the security operatives to consider increasing the welfare package of the operatives who labour for the safety of Anambra residents.

They also demanded an increased security presence in the Awka North Local Government Area of the state, in the light of the rainy and farming season to avert the clash between herders and farmers.
