Anambra First Lady Urges Action On Eroding Morals In Schools

The wife of the Anambra State Governor, Nonye Soludo, has called on education stakeholders to find practical ways to tackle moral decline in schools.

She spoke during a one-day congress on education held in the state, on Tuesday, themed: “Moral Regeneration and Value Re-orientation At The Basic Education Level: The Role Of Education Stakeholders In Anambra State”

The congress was convened by the Executive Chairman of the Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB), Vera Nwadinobi.

While giving her remarks, Nonye explained that the degenerating level of morality and social values in classrooms calls for immediate and collaborative approaches, or society risks losing the fight completely.

She also noted that much of the fight must begin at home, where she has been largely affected by societal pressure.

She blamed the situation on everyone, including parents, guardians, and religious and community leaders, who she said have lost sight of their responsibilities.

The governor’s wife urged a full review of current strategies and insisted that solutions must be practical and direct.

She stressed the need for a thorough reassessment of current strategies, noting that to achieve victory in the war, a more practical approach is required to address the issues at their root.

Also speaking, Nwadinobi said that basic education is the foundation of moral, civic and intellectual capital, adding that it is during formative years that character is cultivated and values are internalised.

She said the job of stakeholders is critical in restoring shared values and morals and Congress must spark action, turning policies into practice and intentions into impact on the system.

The chairman of the event, Clement Nwogbo, in his address, said that stakeholders must understand the urgency of the problems, as educational values are akin to character and ideological reforms.

He pointed out that investments in education would amount to waste if the right values and orientations do not define the products of the important sectors.

Other speakers and discussants at the event include university lecturers Professors Emeka Ezeonu and Chukwuemeka Nwanegbo; the Executive Chairman of Post Primary Schools Service Commission (PPSSC), Professor Nkechi Ikediugwu; the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo; and the former provost of Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe, Ego Uzozie.
