The 11th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) was a spotlight on Nollywood actors Femi Adebayo and Chioma Akpotha.

The duo won the Best Lead Actors in the male and female categories for their performance in Seven Doors.

Seven Doors tells the story of Adedunjoye, a reluctant king, who faced opposition and kingdom-wide turmoil after his ascension to the throne.

Ignoring advice to appease ancestors by taking seven wives, he endures misfortune, including his daughter’s death.

Adebayo’s portrayal of Adedunjoye earned him widespread recognition.

Other actors nominated in the Best Lead Actor (male) category include Gideon Okeke for “Tokunbo”, Bucci Franklin for “The Weekend”, Femi Branch for “House of Gaa”, Thapelo Makoena for “Skeleton Coast”, Bimbo Manuel for “Princess on a Hill”, Stan Nze for “Suspicion”, and Adedimeji Lateef for “Lisabi: The Uprising”.

On her part, Akpotha played the role of Queen Amaka.

Akpotha’s ability to express deep emotions, even when speaking Yoruba, despite being born Igbo, added authenticity and gravitas to her character.

To win the coveted award, she defeated Gbubemi Ejeye for her role in “Farmer’s Bride,” Uzoamaka Onuoha for “Agemo,” Uche Montana for “Thin Line,” Uzoamaka Aniunoh for “Phoenix Fury,” Hilda Dokubo for “Wives on Strike 3,” and Bimbo Ademoye for “Anikulapo: Rise of the Spectre.”

The AMVCA, founded by MultiChoice Africa in 2013, is an annual event that recognises excellence in the African television and film industry.

The ceremony celebrates outstanding achievements in the industry and the creativity and talent that drive African storytelling.
