The suspended Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, has described the local government elections as free, fair, and credible.

Speaking to newsmen after casting his vote at Unit 15, Ward 1, in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Amaewhule commended the staff of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) for conducting a seamless exercise devoid of violence.

Amaewhule noted that the people of his ward and unit are conscious of the importance of the elections and praised them for the massive turnout.

He expressed hope that the results of the elections would reflect the wishes of the people.

“I must say, so far so good, election is moving on very smoothly. I’m here in Ward 1, Unit 15.

“I just cast my vote as you can see everything went smoothly. Those who are here to conduct the elections are indeed very professional, from the presiding officers to the assistant presiding officers, I’m really impressed with the way the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission has organized this election.

“As you can see, the people are so happy. People are on the que. Nobody is fighting, no snatching of ballot box.

“People of this Unit and indeed here in Ward 1, Obio/Akpor local government area are very conscious of the importance of this process and I believe that at the end of the day, candidates who have participated will be satisfied with the process.

“We pray that at the end of the day, election results will be announced and it will truly reflect the wishes of the people.

While some polling units commenced voting late, the Speaker said voting commenced as early as 8:00am, citing the proximity of RSIEC headquarters to his Ward and polling Unit.

Some electorates in his ward also described the process as free, fair and credible with no challenges.

One of the electorates, Ogbonda Charles, said, “The process is very fair, very good, friendly. You can see the environment yourself there’s no problem. Everything is going accordingly.

Another voter, Blessed Amanda, described the process as “successful”. She added, “I believe with what I’m seeing, we are going to achieve the goal.”
