Alcaraz Defeats Sinner to Reclaim ATP No. 1 Ranking
Carlos Alcaraz has reclaimed the top spot in the PIF ATP Rankings following his triumph over Jannik Sinner in Sunday’s US Open final, marking his first return to No. 1 since 2023.
The Spanish star, 22, will begin his fifth period as World No. 1 on Monday, bringing his total weeks at the pinnacle to 37. Alcaraz overtook Sinner in the PIF ATP Live Rankings when the tournament began, building momentum before securing his ascent back to the top with an impressive 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 triumph against the Italian in the championship match.
Two years ago, Alcaraz overcame Casper Ruud in the US Open final to capture his maiden Grand Slam title while simultaneously achieving the milestone of becoming history’s youngest No. 1 at just 19 years and four months old. This Sunday brought another decisive showdown—this time against Sinner—that resulted in Alcaraz regaining the No. 1 ranking for the first time since September 10, 2023.
Sinner, who made history as Italy’s first World No. 1 when he reached the summit on June 10, 2024, maintained his position for 65 straight weeks. This inaugural stint at the top represents the fourth-longest consecutive reign on record, trailing only Roger Federer (237 weeks), Jimmy Connors (160 weeks), and Lleyton Hewitt (75 weeks).
When Alcaraz captured the ATP Year-End No. 1 presented by PIF distinction in 2022 at age 19, he set the record as the youngest player to earn this recognition, becoming the first teenager to achieve this milestone. With a tournament-leading 61 victories and seven championship titles in 2025, as documented by the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index, Alcaraz appears favorably positioned to secure that honour once again in 2025.
