Passengers Stranded At the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport, Abuja

The Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has said that domestic airlines cancelled about 190 flights within two months while 5,225 flights were delayed.

This was disclosed on Friday by the Acting Director-General of NCAA, Chris Najomo.

He made the disclosure during an engagement session with airlines in Lagos.

Najomo said 5,291 flights were operated in September and 5,513 flights in October 2024 out of which 5,225 were delayed during the period.

He lamented, “Delays and cancellations are sometimes inevitable, but poor management of these disruptions is not.

“It’s the responsibility of airlines to ensure that every disruption, whether due to operational, technical or weather-related challenges, is handled with the utmost professionalism and regard for passengers’ rights, particularly as we are in the harmattan season with poor weather conditions that will affect flight operations.

“Our flight operations data record indicates that in September 2024; 5,291 domestic flights were operated with 2,434 delays and 79 cancellations. In October 2024; 5,513 flights were operated with 2,791 delays and 111 cancellations recorded.

“I must remind all operators of the NCAA Regulations on Passenger Rights during disruptions, as outlined in the Nigeria Civil Aviation (Consumer Protection) Regulations, 2023 (that) these regulations are not optional; they are mandatory obligations.”

Recall the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development said that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority has begun action against airlines for violation of consumer rights.

Some of the offences include violation of short-landed baggage, delayed refunds, flight delays and cancellations, non-responsiveness to official communication from the Authority, manhandled baggage.

The NCAA said while insisting that not nearly all disruptions are the faults of airlines, the regulations are very clear about compliance issues.
