The Accountant General of the Federation, Shamsudeen Ogunjimi, has called for improved fiscal coordination and a deeper interagency partnership with the Nigeria Customs Service.

Ogunjimi revealed this when he paid a courtesy visit to the Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Adewale Adeniyi, in Abuja, on Thursday.

Ogunjimi said the development was necessary for a robust overhaul of the NCS, which, through capacity building of its officers, would promote transparency and accountability in the country’s public finance system.

Ogunjimi said, “This collaboration has just started, and I want to assure you that it is going to be robust.

“I also wish to request that we bring on board some of your officers to our office to be engaged in training that will strengthen inter-agency understanding and cooperation,” Ogunjimi said.

In his response, the CGC described Ogunjimi’s visit as a significant step toward deeper inter-agency fiscal collaboration.

He emphasised the critical role of the Office of the Accountant-General in national revenue management and said the NCS remains committed to its national responsibility, especially in enhancing public revenue generation amid current economic challenges.

Adeniyi reaffirmed the Service’s determination to close fiscal gaps through strategic innovations and operational discipline.

He said, “We have seen how critical revenue generation is in this country, and we are doing our best on our part.

“Looking at how the Service was able to increase its revenue by over 70 per cent before the end of 2024, it is a demonstration of our resolve to support the government’s financial stability.”

In response to Ogunjimi’s proposal for a joint training initiative between the institutions, Adeniyi pledged full support for its implementation.
