ACG Chinyere Awo: A Model Of Dedication In Nigeria Customs Service

In every institution, there are individuals whose careers quietly define the values of service, loyalty, and resilience. Within the Nigeria Customs Service, Assistant Comptroller General Chinyere Angeline Awo is one of such figures. For more than three decades, she has worn the uniform with distinction and steadily built a reputation as an officer who embodies integrity and dedication.

ACG Awo hails from Amaeke Abam in Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State. Born on September 22, 1965, in Benin City, she grew up in the family of Chief D. E. D. Ohabuike and Lolo Clara Ohabuike, whose influence instilled in her discipline, faith, and a strong sense of purpose. Those early values have never left her. Today, they remain the foundation on which her life and career are built.

A graduate of Pure Chemistry from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, she began her career in the Nigeria Customs Service in 1991 as an Assistant Superintendent. What followed was a steady climb, each step earned through hard work, consistency, and a dedication to public service. Her elevation to Assistant Comptroller General of Customs was the culmination of years of dedication to duty and a recognition of her contributions to the NCS.

In 2024, she attended the prestigious National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, as part of Senior Executive Course 46, to further sharpen her leadership and policy skills. Over the years, she has also taken part in numerous international training and workshops. These include the World Customs Organisation’s Leadership and Management Development Programme and digital transformation courses in Kigali, Rwanda.

ACG Awo’s career has also taken her across the world. She has travelled to the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, China, and India, amongst others for professional development and international engagements.

Her efforts have also been recognised. She is the recipient of the World Customs Organisation’s Certificate of Merit Award, as well as the award for Exceptional Service to the International Customs Community during her tenure at the TINCAN Island Port Command. The honours are evidence of not just her personal achievements but her role in strengthening Nigeria’s place in the global customs community.

Yet, beyond the accolades and high offices, ACG Awo has efficiently handled the responsibilities of being an officer, a wife and a mother. She is a wife to Chief Awo Udo Awo and mother to their son, Noble Chinedu Awo. Her family remains a pillar in her life, just as her faith gives her grounding. Guided by her belief that “All life exists because of God’s love,” she approaches life and service with humility and a sense of higher purpose. In her quieter moments, she enjoys reading, writing, and personal reflection.

Meanwhile, her professional interests have continued to evolve with the times. One of her current focus areas is on how information and communication technology can transform revenue generation in the Nigeria Customs Service. This was a subject she researched during her NIPSS course. She believes that modernising customs through technology is a policy goal that can help build a more efficient and transparent system.

Awo’s career is, at its heart, a story of devotion to her family, to her faith, and to her country. It’s no surprise that she is seen today as a portrait of honour and consistency. She’s no doubt a model of dedication in the Nigeria Customs Service.
