The Arewa Consultative Forum has expressed profound sadness over the passing of a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Lieutenant-General Jeremiah Useni (retd.).

Useni, a renowned soldier, politician, and former Chairman of its Board of Trustees(ACF), died on Thursday, January 23, 2025, at the age of 82, after a protracted illness.

The elder statesman also served in various capacities, including as Minister of Transport and Senator representing Plateau South.

In a statement issued by the National Publicity Secretary of ACF, Prof. Tukur Muhammad-Baba in Kaduna on Friday, the forum described Useni as a “quintessential soldier, officer, and gentleman” who gave his all in service to Nigeria.

“ACF has learnt with profound sadness the passage to Eternal Glory of Lt. General Jeremiah Timbut Useni.

“He was a war hero, Military Administrator, nationalist, severally Minister of Transport and also the Federal Capital Territory, Distinguished Senator of the Federal Republic, elder statesman, community leader in his home state of Plateau, among other numerous command positions in the Nigerian Military and other key national posts he had held in his life and times,” the statement read.

The ACF praised Useni’s leadership style, saying he was a “progressive and inclusive leader” during his tenure as Chairman of its BOT.

As a one-time Chairman of the ACF’s BOT, Useni was instrumental in promoting the forum’s objectives and ideals, the statement added.

The ACF extended its condolences to Useni’s family, friends, colleagues, and the government and people of Plateau State, as the nation awaits the announcement of his funeral obsequies.

“ACF extends its condolences to his family and friends, colleagues in the military (serving and retired), as well as the Government and peoples of the Plateau State,” the statement read.

The Forum added that Useni’s passing was a great loss to the country and would be remembered as one of the architects of modern Nigeria.
