Abuja Residents Fault Wike’s Authority, Call For Elections

Federal Capital Territory

Residents of Abuja have expressed concerns over the authority of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, claiming that he lacks the legislative power to approve and allocate funds for FCT citizens as a state under the 1999 Constitution.

They also asserted that all actions and decisions made by both current and previous administrations regarding this matter are illegal.

In a statement released by the leader of Abuja Natives, Danjuma Tanko Dara, on Sunday, the residents underscored that the FCT is not a traditional state but a federally administered territory, which limits the minister’s administrative powers.

They argued that Wike’s recent budgetary decisions and expenditures not only violate the Constitution but also undermine democratic governance principles.

Dara, however, called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to prepare for immediate elections to fill all democratic elective offices within the FCT.

He emphasised the need for action from the commission to restore the democratic process in the territory, as the existing governance structures are perceived as lacking legitimacy.

“We will soon issue an ultimatum to INEC and those who oppose democratic governance as we seek compliance with the rule of law in the FCT.

“The time has come for citizens’ voices to be recognised through a legitimate electoral process since the actions of the current administration do not reflect the people’s will.

“We are demanding that all stakeholders in governance recognise and adhere to the constitutional requirements for the FCT.

“It is alarming that, despite our privileged elites fighting for independence from foreign control, a select few are now oppressing various sectors for their satisfaction at the expense of the populace.

“We also support the current tax reforms and advocate for regional self-reliance. Our people are losing faith in us for failing to deliver the dividends of democracy. Instead, they face terrorist attacks in their villages and farmlands, an issue the appointed minister seems unaware of,” he said.
