Abia Govt Vows To Continue Enforcing Strict Procurement Law
The Abia State Government has fully enforced its procurement laws, making it mandatory for all contractors and vendors to register with the Due Process and Public Procurement Bureau before doing business with the state.
This was disclosed by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Due Process, Dr. Oluebube Amarachi Chukwu in an exclusive interview with THE WHISTLER.
Speaking, Dr. Chukwu revealed that before his appointment, many civil servants and business operators in the state were unaware of the bureau’s existence.
However, through deliberate reforms, the agency has now become a key player in the governance structure of the state.
He credited Governor Otti for his commitment to due process and good governance, stating that the governor placed the “right pegs in the right holes” by revitalizing the bureau, which now boasts 11 fully operational units, including administration, procurement, compliance, regulations, civil infrastructure, quantity surveying, legal, and finance.
He revealed that one of the notable achievements of the bureau is its contribution to revenue generation for the state.
According to Chukwu, businesses seeking government contracts must now register with the bureau, ensuring compliance with the Abia State Public Procurement Law of 2012.
This initiative, which was nonexistent before the current administration, has significantly increased state revenue.
“In the past, documentation was a major issue in Abia State. But today, due process is strictly adhered to, and contracts are awarded based on compliance with procurement laws. We are also maintaining a register of all contractors, vendors, and service providers,” he said.
Dr. Chukwu further stated that the bureau has leveraged media campaigns and public sensitization to educate businesses about the new system, ensuring that all procurement processes are transparent and accessible.
He also disclosed that all payments for registration and certification are done online via www.abiapay.com to eliminate corruption.
He reassured the public that the state’s procurement process now operates with efficiency and integrity, with a seamless online registration system that ensures businesses can work with the government without bureaucratic bottlenecks.
“Governor Otti’s leadership style has made it easy for his appointees to deliver on their mandates, and Abians are receptive to these reforms.
“The transformation of the Due Process Bureau is just one of many positive changes happening in the state,” he added.
