The Abia State Government has handed over the completion of the abandoned hostel project at the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Mgbarakuma, Ubakala to a new contractor, Jalingo Construction Limited with a mandate to complete the project within three months.

Speaking on behalf of the government during the official handover ceremony at the project site, the Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Dr Sunny Jackson, described the exercise as timely, especially given the increasing threat of flooding due to climate change.

Dr. Jackson stated that the administration of Governor Alex Otti has provided SEMA with the necessary backing to function effectively and remains committed to delivering results through impactful, action-driven projects.

He urged the contractor to adhere strictly to the terms of reference and assured that once completed, the hostel would play a vital role in enhancing disaster resilience for displaced persons in the state.

Handing over the project formally the Chief Administrative officer of the Presidential Committee on Flood Relief and Rehabilitation, Mr. Chigbundu Emelogu, said he was in the state on behalf of the committee to reassign the previous abandoned structure to the new contractor.

He emphasized that the federal and state Governments are aligned in ensuring that critical relief infrastructure is completed and put to proper use.

In his response, Mr. Amobi Ebokan, the representative of Jalingo construction Limited, appreciated both levels of government for the opportunity and pledged to immediately mobilize to site and ensure a quality and timely completion of the project.

The event concluded with the formal signing of the handover certificate, marking the beginning of a new phase for the long abandoned facility.
