Abia government worries over rising cult activities

The Abia State Government has expressed deep concern over the increasing incidents of cult-related activities across the state.

In response to this growing menace, the government has directed security agencies to take decisive action against the perpetrators, described as undesirable elements threatening public peace.

This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, during a press briefing at Government House, Umuahia, on Monday. He addressed journalists on the outcomes of the week’s executive council meeting, which was presided over by Governor Alex Otti.

Kanu stressed that the government would not tolerate any cult group disturbing the peace and safety of innocent citizens in the state.

“The state government has observed with dismay the growing incidents of cult activities in the state.

“As a responsible government, this administration will spare no efforts in ensuring that the State is rid of cult activities,” Kanu said.

He also announced that staff of Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, who were disengaged by the previous administration between 2018 and 2022, have begun receiving their outstanding entitlements, with 249 individuals already paid.

Additionally, Kanu revealed that the recruitment of health workers, recently approved by Governor Otti, has commenced. The application portals have been opened by the Abia State Civil Service Commission for interested candidates.
