Abia Assembly Passes Bill To Establish Centre For Senior Citizens

The Abia State House Of Assembly has passed the Abia State Senior Citizens Center Bill.

The passage of the Bill followed its Consideration in the Committee of the whole and its third reading during plenary on Thursday.

The law according to the sponsor, Hon. Okoro Uchenna Kalu (Majority Leader) seeks to establish the Abia State Senior Citizens Center to cater to the needs of senior citizens in the state and to Provide a framework for the care, welfare, and support of elderly citizens.

Announcing the passage of the Bill, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa commended his colleagues for their contributions and achieving the feat.

He announced that the law would have been deemed to have come into force from this day April 3rd, 2025 when assented to by the Governor, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti.

Earlier before the passage of the Bill, the house had received the report of its joint committee of Health, Trade and Commerce on the Invasion of some Markets in Aba by National Agency For Food, Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

The report was presented by the Co-chairman, Hon. Obioma Emeka Umuahia South.

The Joint Committee in their report recommended that NAFDAC should conditionally unlock the market within two weeks to enable those doing their legitimate businesses to carry on.

The report was adopted by the house as its working document and committed the same to the committee of the whole for further consideration.
