88 stranded students in Cyprus, parents seek Zamfara govt’s intervention

Parents of 88 Zamfara students stranded in Cyprus have appealed to Governor Dauda Lawal to urgently settle outstanding debts owed to institutions in the country.

Chairman of the Cyprus Students’ Parents Association, Ibrahim Tudu, said in a statement issued in Gusau on Saturday that the students were in a critical situation, with their tuition fees, accommodation, residence permits, and feeding unpaid.

According to him, the accumulated debt amounts to over N1 billion, leaving the students unable to continue their studies.

“We are appealing to His Excellency to please respond positively and pay the debt so our children can continue their studies,” Tudu said, adding that misinformation had been spread about the students’ condition.

Governor Lawal’s Senior Special Assistant, Malam Mustafa Jafaru-Kaura, recently said the state government had already paid N290 million for the students.

He added that flight tickets had been issued for them to return to Nigeria, but they refused to come back.
