300 Traders Receive Free Medical Treatment In Delta

A member representing Oshimili South Local Government in the Delta State House of Assembly, Bridget Anyafulu, in conjunction with Asaba Specialist Hospital, has reportedly offered free medical treatment and drugs to over 300 traders in Ogbogonogo market, Asaba, Delta State.

The outreach held on Saturday was in commemoration of 2025 World Hypertension Day

Flagging off the free medical services, Anyafulu said the gesture was to make market men and women healthy in rendering the service of bringing foodstuffs from different parts.

Anyafulu noted that the free medical services are being carried out in conjunction with the Asaba Specialist Hospital with a view to making her constituents healthy.

“I have brought these doctors and nurses, and other medical workers to you in the market because of your busy schedule. You don’t have time to check your health status,” she said. We have come here in conjunction with Asaba Specialist Hospital to make sure that you are healthy.

“These days, you hear that somebody is working or selling and suddenly falls and dies because he or she has not been checking his or her BP. We have a case of a woman in this Ogbogonogo. By the time we took her to Asaba Specialist Hospital, and we were referred to Enugu, we eventually lost her, so I feel that we have not been following up on the health status of these traders.”

She further disclosed that efforts are on the way to enroll the market men and women in Ogbogonogo in the state insurance scheme.

Also speaking, the Chief Medical Director of ASH, Peace Ighosewe, said, “Today was a day set aside by WHO to create awareness about hypertension. Hypertension is a major killer of people, especially young people these days, and not the elderly.

“We, the Asaba Specialist Hospital, felt to collaborate with Bridget Anyafulu member representing Oshimili South in the House of Assembly, to carry out an awareness exercise and free medical services for the people in Ogbogonogo market.

“We are checking their blood pressure, telling them what hypertension is and why it is important to know their number, and then we are also checking for the signs of hypertension. When you hear of hypertension, you hear diabetes. They usually go together, and when both of them are combined, the outcome is very bad.

“So, we are checking blood pressure and sugar and giving them drugs for free, and we also check for common complications like body pain, malaria, and others and advise them for further checks.”

Speaking further, the special assistant on health matters, Chukwemaka Obiazor, appreciated the donors for this gesture, noting that hypertension is one of the common illnesses among Nigerians.

He said today’s event was to create massive awareness as part of a day set aside for World Hypertension Day, urging Nigerians to always check their BP with a view to preventing sudden death.

In his remarks, the Chairman of Ogbogonoga market, Aboyi Chijindu, commended Anyafulu and her team for bringing free medical services to the market. “It is true that we don’t have time to check our health. At 8 am, most of us are already in the market, and we will be here till 9 to 10 pm; even on Sunday, we are still in the market, so bringing this will go a long way in addressing our health challenges,” Chijindu said.
