2026 WCQ: Rohr highlights Benin’s potential points tie with South Africa under FIFA rules
Head coach of Benin Republic, Gernot Rohr, has pinpointed his side’s potential points tie with South Africa under FIFA rules in Group C.
Rohr spoke while urging FIFA to make a ruling on the eligibility case involving South Africa midfielder Teboho Mokoena.
Should FIFA take a decision of deducting three points from South Africa, it could significantly affect the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in Group C, which comprises Benin Republic, Nigeria, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, and Lesotho.
Recall that South Africa are under scrutiny after Mokoena, who was suspended because of yellow card accumulation, played in their March qualifier victory against Lesotho.
A favourable ruling from FIFA would dock Bafana Bafana the points, leaving them and Benin Republic level on the same points.
Speaking recently after Benin’s 4-0 win over Lesotho, Rohr said in quotes relayed by DB Medias: “If all goes well, today we’re tied on points with South Africa, who should lose three points according to the rules.
“I don’t understand why FIFA has not made a decision yet, but the rules are very clear on this subject.
“In that case, we would be tied with South Africa and anything would still be possible.”
South Africa are on top of Group C with 17 points from two matches, while Benin Republic have 14 points from the same number of games.
