West Ham reveal ‘regret’ at Calvert-Lewin transfer decision

A senior spokesman for the West Ham board has said the club ‘regret’ not pursuing a deal for Dominic Calvert-Lewin last summer.

West Ham were linked with signing Calvert-Lewin after his contract at Everton expired. The 28-year-old instead signed for newly-promoted Leeds United and has been one of the Premier League’s best value signings this season.

Calvert-Lewin has scored 10 goals in the Premier League this season and is the highest-scoring English player in the division.

After deciding against pursuing Calvert-Lewin, West Ham signed Callum Wilson on a free transfer. The veteran has started just nine times in the league and the Hammers spent a further £47m on forwards Taty Castellanos and Pablo Felipe in January.

West Ham are currently 18th in the Premier League table, two points from safety, and battling against relegation.

A club insider has revealed that former manager Graham Potter was behind the decision not to sign a striker last summer.

Speaking to HammersDotNews, an unnamed spokesperson for the West Ham board said: “We regret not signing Calvert-Lewin, especially on a free transfer.

“Mr Potter didn’t want a forward and would not let us sign one. Nuno came in and identified he wanted two and it has helped massively.”
