Sunderland XI vs Liverpool – Predicted lineup and team news

Sunderland travel to Anfield today, aiming to achieve a rare feat. The Black Cats want to beat a reigning Premier League champion away from home for only the third time in their history.

Currently sitting seventh in the table, they arrive on Merseyside full of confidence. This follows a dramatic weekend win. Régis Le Bris’s side have been tough to break down on the road this season. However, they face a Liverpool team that is unbeaten in their last 10 meetings. Moreover, Sunderland have not won a league game at Anfield since 1983. Therefore, breaking that 42-year hoodoo would be a historic achievement for the promoted side.

Sunderland team news

Sunderland manager Régis Le Bris is without key midfielder Habib Diarra for the trip to Anfield. A groin injury rules out the summer signing. Unfortunately, he joins defender Aji Alese (shoulder) on the sidelines, which depletes the Black Cats’ defensive options.

However, the manager has a major new weapon in attack. Brian Brobbey is pushing for his first Premier League start. The Dutch striker came off the bench to score the winner in the 3-2 comeback victory over Bournemouth last weekend. Consequently, he is in contention to lead the line against the champions.

Brobbey’s inclusion could prompt a tactical shift from Le Bris. He may look to bolster his backline against Liverpool’s potent attack. Therefore, Lutsharel Geertruida is expected to come into the defence to provide extra solidity. This potentially allows the team to switch shape. In midfield, captain Granit Xhaka will retain his place as the anchor. He is tasked with dictating play and disrupting the rhythm of the title-holders.
